Reficar Refinery Expansion (Cartagena, Colombia)
It took several years of planning and development to double the size of the capacity of the Reficar Refinery in Cartagena,Colombia.
Reficar is owned and operated by Refineria de Cartagena, an affiliate of Ecopetrol. Ecopetrol is a Colombian based integrated oil and gas company.
Reficar increased the capacity of its Cartagena, Colombia Refinery from 80,000 barrels per day to 165,000 barrels per day. This expansion allows the refinery to produce ultra low sulfur gasoline and diesel while meeting all of the current environmental requirements.
The expansion included a delayed coker, hydrocracker, low sulphur diesel units, alky units, hydrogen plant, LPG treating units, CO gen power plants, storage tanks, etc. The total project cost was $6 billion US.
The EPC firm on this project was Chicago Bridge and Iron. Insulations, Inc was a subcontractor to CB&I due to our experience – we have worked with CB&I for over 40 years including other international projects.
Insulations, Inc. installed $8,500,000 of intumescent fireproofing on structural steel during this expansion. Reficar chose to use both PPG’s Pitt-Char XP and International Paints Chartek 1709.
While on this project for two years installing the fireproofing, we hired and trained local Colombian craft workers to perform the work. Our quality and safety were rated outstanding.
